The father of Azerbaijani professional music. The man who wrote the first opera of the Muslim East, the immortal Arshin Mal Alan, the opera Koroghlu and the anthem of his country.
Who he is
Uzeyir Hajibeyov is the figure with whom all Azerbaijani professional music begins. A composer, musicologist, publicist, teacher and public figure.
He joined the folk mugham with the European operatic form, founded a national school of music and gave his country its key melodies — from the first opera to the state anthem.

"I wanted to give my people their own, written-down music."
On Uzeyir Hajibeyov

The birth of opera
In 1908 Hajibeyov staged Leyli and Majnun — the first opera in the entire Muslim world. So the genre of mugham-opera was born, uniting written music with the living improvisation of mugham.
