Who he is
Uzeyir Hajibeyov is the figure with whom all Azerbaijani professional music begins. A composer, musicologist, publicist, teacher and public figure.
He joined the folk mugham with the European operatic form, founded a national school of music and gave his country its key melodies — from the first opera to the state anthem.

The birth of opera
In 1908 Hajibeyov staged Leyli and Majnun — the first opera in the entire Muslim world. So the genre of mugham-opera was born, uniting written music with the living improvisation of mugham.

His melodies play in theatres and on the radio, the conservatory bears his name, and the anthem he composed opens every state celebration of Azerbaijan.
