A master's path

Life

The life of Uzeyir Hajibeyov is a journey from a Karabakh village to the summit of national culture, from his first lessons to the creation of a whole school of music.

Hajibeyov was not only a composer but an enlightener: he taught, wrote and organised — and built Azerbaijani music like a building.

Life

Origins

Uzeyir Abdul-Huseyn oghlu Hajibeyov was born on 18 September 1885 in the village of Aghjabadi near Shusha — in a land where the Karabakh mugham resounded. The musical world of Karabakh was his first school.

He gained an education, began teaching and writing early, and turned his talent to giving his people professional, written-down music.

Life

An enlightener

Hajibeyov was both a publicist and a teacher. He worked at the Baku Conservatory — first as vice-rector, then as rector — and raised a generation of Azerbaijani musicians.

His activity went far beyond the stage: he created curricula, wrote articles and laid the foundations of national music education.
